Tim O'Brien won the National Book Award in 1979 for "Going After Cacciato," a novel about an American soldier who walks from Vietnam to Paris. O'Brien served in Vietnam; his fiction returns to that war. "The Things They Carried" (1990) is the essential Vietnam story collection.
