Umberto Eco's "The Name of the Rose" (1980) made medieval semiotics into a worldwide bestseller—a murder mystery in a fourteenth-century monastery. Eco was a professor of semiotics at Bologna who wrote philosophy, criticism, and eventually fiction. His novels are dense with learning and plot. He died in 2016.
