Viktor Shklovsky was a Russian literary critic and novelist who was a founding member of the Society for the Study of Poetic Language (OPOYAZ) and a leading figure of Russian formalism. His concept of defamiliarization (ostranenie) became one of the most influential ideas in twentieth-century literary theory.
