Francois-Marie Arouet, known universally as Voltaire, was the dominant intellectual figure of the European Enlightenment. His plays, essays, histories, and satirical fictions championed reason, tolerance, and civil liberties while attacking religious dogma and political tyranny. Exiled, imprisoned in the Bastille, and celebrated across Europe, he became the archetype of the public intellectual.
