Wallace Stegner won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1972 for "Angle of Repose," a novel about a historian examining his grandparents' western lives. "The Spectator Bird" (1977) won the National Book Award. Stegner founded Stanford's creative writing program and trained generations of Western writers. His work insists the West be taken seriously as literature.
