Walter Dean Myers was one of the most prolific and important authors of African-American young adult literature, with over a hundred books spanning five decades. He grew up in Harlem, served in the Army, and wrote about Black boys navigating violence, poverty, and the justice system with empathy, precision, and rage. He was the National Ambassador for Young People's Literature from 2012 to 2013.
