Walter M. Miller Jr. flew 53 bomber missions in World War II, including the controversial bombing of the Benedictine monastery at Monte Cassino. That experience haunted him for life and produced A Canticle for Leibowitz, one of the most acclaimed science fiction novels ever written. He published little else and took his own life in 1996.
