Sir Walter Scott was a Scottish novelist, poet, and historian who virtually invented the historical novel. His Waverley novels, including Ivanhoe, Rob Roy, and The Heart of Midlothian, were the most widely read fiction in Europe for a generation and influenced the development of the novel across the continent.
