W.H. Auden was one of the most important poets of the twentieth century. Born in England, he emigrated to the United States in 1939. His work ranges from the politically engaged poetry of the 1930s through the Christian meditations of his middle period to the relaxed, ludic verse of his later years. He was a virtuoso of poetic form and an influential critic and essayist.
