William Beckford was an English novelist, art collector, and politician best known for Vathek, an Orientalist Gothic novel written in French. Enormously wealthy and deeply eccentric, he built the extravagant Fonthill Abbey and assembled one of the great art collections of his era. Vathek remains his lasting literary achievement.
