William Blake was a poet, painter, and printmaker who produced illuminated books combining original verse with hand-colored engravings. Ignored by his contemporaries and dismissed as a madman, he created a visionary mythology that encompassed politics, theology, and art. The twentieth century recognized him as one of the most original figures in English Romanticism.
