William Empson wrote Seven Types of Ambiguity at twenty-two, demonstrating a genius for close reading that shaped twentieth-century criticism. He taught in Japan and China for years, producing two more critical works (Some Versions of Pastoral and The Structure of Complex Words) and a body of dense, intellectually demanding poetry. His later career was dominated by a polemical campaign against Christian readings of English literature.
