William H. Gass was an American novelist, short story writer, essayist, and literary critic. A philosopher by training, he was one of the most devoted practitioners of prose as an art form, insisting that fiction's primary medium is language rather than character or plot. His major works include Omensetter's Luck, In the Heart of the Heart of the Country, and The Tunnel.
