William Golding won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1983 for his novels "which, with the perspicuity of realistic narrative art and the diversity and universality of myth, illuminate the human condition in the world of today." "Lord of the Flies" (1954) became a school classic; his later novels—"The Inheritors," "Pincher Martin," "Rites of Passage"—are darker and stranger. "Rites of Passage" (1980) won the Booker Prize.
