William Peter Blatty was a novelist and screenwriter who spent years researching demonic possession before writing The Exorcist, which became one of the best-selling novels of the 1970s. He won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for the film version. His later work continued to explore faith, doubt, and the supernatural.
