William S. Burroughs

American · 1914–1997

William S. Burroughs wrote "Naked Lunch" (1959), a novel composed of routines—hallucinatory set pieces about addiction, control, and American nightmare. The book was banned, tried, and eventually vindicated. Burroughs was a Beat Generation elder who shot his wife in a drunken game. His cut-up technique influenced generations of experimenters.
