Wole Soyinka won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1986—the first African laureate—for plays that "fashion the drama of existence." The Nigerian playwright, poet, and activist spent years in prison during his country's civil war. "Death and the King's Horseman" (1975) remains his essential play. Soyinka continues to write and speak against tyranny.
