Yasar Kemal was Turkey's most celebrated novelist, known for his epic tales of Anatolian peasant life. Born to a Kurdish family in the Taurus Mountains region, he drew on oral tradition, folklore, and his own experience of rural poverty. His Memed novels made him an international figure and a perennial Nobel Prize candidate. He was also a prominent political activist and journalist.
