Yoshida Kenko (also known as Urabe no Kaneyoshi) was a Japanese author, poet, and Buddhist monk. After serving at the imperial court, he took Buddhist orders and retired to a hermitage. His Essays in Idleness is one of the most celebrated works of Japanese literature and a foundational text of Japanese aesthetics.
