Zbigniew Herbert was a Polish poet and essayist whose work is characterized by its moral seriousness, classical learning, and dry irony. He grew up under Nazi and then Communist occupation and his poetry responds to totalitarianism through allegiance to civilized values. His recurring persona Mr. Cogito is one of the great figures of twentieth-century poetry.
