What Fable is for
Fable made book clubs work on a phone. Clubs run by real people — including well-known ones — with reading schedules, in-line discussion, and a genuinely beautiful interface. If your reading life is social, that is not a small thing: a good club is the difference between finishing a book and abandoning it, and Fable has built the best club experience of the current apps.
It is also free to join, and its curation — lists, club picks, editorial voice — is warm and well done.
Two approaches to AI
Both products use AI, differently. Fable's AI-generated reader summaries had a widely publicized rough start in early 2025, when some summaries contained offensive remarks; the company apologized and changed course. We note it neutrally because anyone comparing AI features will find it anyway — and because any product's AI, ours included, should be judged on how it handles its mistakes.
ReadingRate's AI is a reading companion, and it is deliberately grounded: it works from what you have actually read, logged, and noted, rather than generating personality takes about you. It is a membership feature, and its job is narrow — help you understand and choose books, with your own reading history as context.
Analytics-first vs social-first
ReadingRate has clubs too, but the center of gravity is your own data: page logs become reading speed, speed becomes predicted finish dates, and every book carries a nine-dimension difficulty profile and a literary-regard score before you commit to it. Fable tells you what your club is reading; ReadingRate tells you whether you will realistically finish it by the meeting.
