Andrew Miller writes historical fiction that illuminates past eras without costume-drama nostalgia. His 1999 debut "Ingenious Pain" won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize and the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award with its tale of an eighteenth-century surgeon incapable of feeling physical pain. "Pure" won the 2011 Costa Book of the Year for its account of emptying a Parisian cemetery on the eve of the Revolution. Miller finds in history mirrors for present anxieties.
