Nigerian · b. 1959

Ben Okri won the 1991 Booker Prize for "The Famished Road," which follows a spirit child through Nigerian reality and myth. The novel created a new form of African magical realism, where the spirit world bleeds into daily life. Okri's poetry and essays extend his vision of literature as spiritual practice. He writes as if words themselves could transform reality.
