Ben Okri won the 1991 Booker Prize for "The Famished Road," which follows a spirit child through Nigerian reality and myth. The novel created a new form of African magical realism, where the spirit world bleeds into daily life. Okri's poetry and essays extend his vision of literature as spiritual practice.
