Marieke Lucas Rijneveld won the International Booker Prize in 2020 for "The Discomfort of Evening," a debut novel about a Dutch farming family shattered by a child's death. The narrator is a ten-year-old who processes grief through obsessive rituals and disturbing fantasies. Rijneveld was the youngest winner of the International Booker at twenty-nine. They are also a poet and farmer. The novel's power comes from its refusal to look away from how children actually think.
