Mordecai Richler was the satirist of Montreal's Jewish community. "The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz" (1959) follows an ambitious young man on the make; "St. Urbain's Horseman" (1971) was shortlisted for the Booker Prize. "Solomon Gursky Was Here" (1989) is his most ambitious—a sprawling novel about a Jewish dynasty from the Canadian Arctic to the Holocaust. Richler's wit was merciless; his sentences bit. He died in 2001.
