Ralph Ellison wrote one of the great American novels. "Invisible Man" (1952) won the National Book Award for its account of a Black man's journey from the South through Harlem, invisible because white America refuses to see him. Ellison worked on a second novel for forty years but never finished it. His essays on literature and music remain essential. "Invisible Man" still speaks.
