Sadegh Hedayat was the most influential Iranian writer of the twentieth century. His masterwork The Blind Owl, written in a hallucinatory modernist style blending Persian literary traditions with European surrealism, is considered one of the great novels of world literature. He spent periods in France and India before returning to Tehran, and took his own life in Paris.
