Viet Thanh Nguyen won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2016 for "The Sympathizer," a novel narrated by a communist spy in Vietnam and Los Angeles. Nguyen came to America as a refugee at age four. His fiction and criticism examine the Vietnam War from the Vietnamese side—a perspective American literature had largely ignored.
