  1. Pamela Andrews is fifteen years old and in service when her mistress dies and the mistress's son, Mr. B, begins a campaign to seduce her. She refuses. He escalates — intercepting her letters, relocating her to a remote estate, locking her in — and she keeps writing, to her parents and in a secret journal she hides in her clothing. What makes the novel strange is that we only have Pamela's account: earnest, relentlessly self-observing, written in the knowledge that Mr. B may one day read every word she has set down. Published in 1740, Pamela invented something — not just the epistolary novel, but the novel's peculiar project of making a single consciousness the center of a world. Richardson called his method 'writing to the moment': the heroine records events as they happen, before she knows how they will turn out. Readers have been arguing about Pamela's sincerity ever since. Henry Fielding published Shamela the following year, certain the whole performance was calculation dressed as virtue. That argument — is Pamela genuinely good, or is goodness here just the strategy that worked? — has never been settled. The novel is slow by design: captivity is repetitive, and Richardson wants you to feel it. But the compression of one young woman's inner life, the surveillance she endures and returns in kind, and the original sin of a marriage that rewards persistence over refusal make Pamela one of the most uncomfortable triumphs in English fiction.

  2. The Captain's Daughter anchors the Russian literary canon alongside Eugene Onegin. It appears in virtually every Russian literature survey course worldwide, is part of the secondary school curriculum in Russia, and has been continuously in print since 1836. No syllabus data was returned from the database, but its foundational status in Slavic studies is unambiguous.

  3. Ivanhoe is a fixture of British Romantic literature curricula and appears on virtually every survey of the historical novel as the genre's foundational text in English. While syllabus data was not captured in the database, the novel's Wikipedia article spans well over 50 languages and it remains one of the most recognized works of 19th-century British fiction. It gave the English language the cultural template for medieval chivalry — the Crusades, Normans vs. Saxons, Robin Hood — that persists in popular imagination today.

  4. No. 4 on this list. Manon Lescaut

    Abbé Prévost · 1731

    Easy2.9 hours

Taught in schools: Programme de français, lycée général et technologique (France)

A cornerstone of the French novel and one of the great love stories of European literature. Widely read and studied.

  5. Waverley is taught in virtually every British Romantic and Victorian literature survey course as the founding text of the historical novel genre. While not as universally assigned as Shakespeare or Dickens, it appears regularly on syllabi in British literature, Scottish studies, and 19th-century fiction courses worldwide. The novel's foundational status in literary history ensures its continuous presence in academic curricula, though its classroom reach has narrowed from its 19th-century peak.

  6. A staple of Bengali and Hindi literature syllabi and one of the most culturally saturated stories in South Asia.

  7. No. 7 on this list. Home of the Gentry

    Ivan Turgenev · 1859

    Moderate4.1 hours

Taught in schools: Russian FGOS literature standard

Home of the Gentry is a standard text in Russian literature curricula, regularly anthologized alongside Turgenev's major works. It is less central to Western syllabi than Fathers and Sons but figures prominently in courses on 19th-century European realism. No data from Open Syllabus is available in the database, but its presence in scholarly editions and collected works reflects sustained institutional regard.

  8. Chang is recognized as a major figure in modern Chinese literature and is regularly taught in Chinese literature, Asian studies, and world literature courses. This Penguin Modern Classics edition and inclusion in the Columbia Anthology of Modern Chinese Literature signal canonical standing. Her syllabi presence in Western universities remains more limited than in Chinese-speaking academic institutions, where she is a curriculum staple.

  9. Under the Greenwood Tree is taught in British literature and Hardy courses as the founding text of his Wessex cycle, but it occupies a supporting role in the canon relative to Tess of the d'Urbervilles or Far from the Madding Crowd. It appears on specialist Hardy syllabi and English pastoral fiction courses rather than general surveys. No syllabus data was found in the database, but the work's position in Hardy's oeuvre and the breadth of Hardy scholarship gives it modest but genuine canonical presence.

  10. On TIME's All-TIME 100 Novels, Le Monde's 100 Books of the Century and the 1001 Books list, and voted 21st in the BBC Big Read. Appears on 115 university syllabi (52nd percentile), mostly in courses on Southern literature, popular fiction and the memory of the Civil War.

  3. No. 13 on this list. White Nights · Fyodor Dostoevsky · 1848

White Nights is a standard entry in Russian literature survey courses and a common first Dostoevsky assignment precisely because of its brevity and accessibility, but it doesn't carry the curricular weight of Crime and Punishment or The Brothers Karamazov. It appears reliably in anthologies of Dostoevsky's short fiction and 19th-century Russian literature courses. No syllabus or Wikipedia-language data was available in the database for this specific title.

  4. No. 14 on this list. The Italian · Ann Radcliffe · 1796

Roxanne Coss, opera's most revered soprano, has mesmerized the international guests with her singing. It is a perfect evening -- until a band of gun-wielding terrorists breaks in through the air-conditioning vents and takes the entire party hostage. But what begins as a panicked, life-threatening scenario slowly evolves into something quite different, as terrorists and hostages forge unexpected bonds and people from different countries and continents become compatriots. About this list

These 100 books are the highest-scoring eligible easy romance novels currently in the catalogue. By literary regard, it opens with Pamela, The Captain's Daughter and Ivanhoe. About 539 hours of reading in all, for the 97 with measured lengths. Difficulty runs from 19 to 35 out of 100 for the middle half of the list; the summit is Gone with the Wind at 45.

This list is ranked by literary regard, with a consistent order for equal scores. Membership follows authors and co-authors, not translators or editors. Catalogue coverage and the historical canon both limit what this list can represent, and genre labels are the catalogue’s own, gathered into broader kinds.

When we matched the Canons dataset to our catalogue in October 2026, our canonical-status scores rose with the number of school curricula, publisher series and lists in it that cite a work: the median score was 72 for books one such source cites, 84 at two, 88 at three, 92 at four and 93 at five or more. Prizes are left out of that count. Outside the state curricula, the dataset’s sources choose mostly from what has been translated into English or French, so it is a weaker check on other literatures. Questions people actually ask

What are the best easy romance novels?
By literary regard, which weighs canonical status, critical standing and influence, Pamela, The Captain's Daughter, Ivanhoe, Manon Lescaut and Waverley lead. ReadingRate ranks 100 such books, each with a difficulty score and a reading-time estimate.
Where should I start with easy romance novels?
Start from difficulty, not from rank. The most approachable books on this list that still carry top literary regard are The Captain's Daughter by Alexander Pushkin (about 2.5 hours), Ivanhoe by Walter Scott and Pamela by Samuel Richardson.
How hard are easy romance novels to read?
Most of this list sits between 19 and 35 on ReadingRate's 100-point difficulty scale, where 40 to 55 is moderate. The summit is Gone with the Wind at 45. Every entry carries its own score, so a reader can pick a great book at a difficulty they will finish.
How is this list ranked?
On literary-regard data: how canonically established a work is, its critical standing, and its influence on later writing. It is not a readers’ poll, which is why recent bestsellers rarely appear. Membership follows authors and co-authors, not translators or editors. A list that is not a genre list keeps to literature (fiction, poetry, drama and philosophy), with philosophy taking no more than one slot in five while there is literature left to rank; every list holds at most three works by one author.
